A man was sentenced Friday to serve the rest of his life in prison for the November 2007 rape of a Suffolk woman.
Calvin Wolfe received four life sentences plus 20 years for charges of rape, abduction and burglary, among others. Jurors convicted him of breaking into a Pughsville home and raping and sodomizing the victim.
After sentencing, the victim spoke with the Suffolk News-Herald, describing the compulsions and trouble sleeping she has experienced since the crime.
“It has made me a very compulsive person,” she said. “I’ve never had compulsions before. Now, I compulsively check my locks as much as 40 times a night.”
The woman, whom the News-Herald is not naming because she is the victim of a sex crime, also described hiding in the closet whenever she hears noises during the night.
“If I wake up in the middle of the night because of a noise or something that startled me awake, I instinctively hit the floor and hide in the closet and listen,” she said. “It’s changed my life.”
Wolfe broke into the victim’s home about 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2007. The victim awoke to find him standing at the foot of her bed.
He ordered her to take off her clothes and then raped and sodomized her. He told her he would kill her if she told anyone, and also mentioned he knew her daughter and the type of car she drove.
After Wolfe left, the victim drove to the Taylor Bend YMCA on Taylor Road in Chesapeake, where she called a friend.
The woman also said she has had trouble sleeping since the attack, sometimes having to rely on sleeping pills. However, that all changed after the sentencing hearing on Friday.
“I slept all the way through the night without waking, which is the first time ever since it happened,” she said. “I woke up at 5:30 and was awake and alert, not groggy and exhausted and fearful.”
