Smither named All-American

Lakeland senior Kelsey Smither (pictured) was named a First Team All-American by Harrow Sports/National Field Hockey Coaches Association and Lakeland head coach Tara Worley was named the NFHCA’s South Region Coach of the Year Monday.

Lady Cavalier head field hockey coach Tara Worley and Lakeland seniors Kelsey Smither and Kendell Combs continue adding awards, including nationwide awards, to the long list of postseason honors.

Smither was named All-American by Harrow Sports/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Monday. Smither was named First Team, one of 16 players from around the nation and the only Virginia player on the first team.

Smither and Combs were named to the NFHCA’s All-Region Team, First Team, last week.

Smither finishes her four-year Lady Cavalier career with 124 assists, the all-time national high school record according to topofthecircle.com. Combs scored 44 goals this season to finish with 109 in her career, which ranks No. 6 all-time for a high school career.

Smither and Combs have accepted college scholarship offers and will be conference rivals starting next fall; Smither at Old Dominion and Combs at Virginia Commonwealth.

Worley was named the 2010 Dita/NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year Monday after leading Lakeland to the VHSL (Virginia High School League) Group AAA State Championship and a 24-0 record this season. Dita/NFHCA selected six high school coaches of the year around the country.

The title is the first in Lakeland field hockey history and the first team state title overall at Lakeland in the school’s 14 years in Group AAA.

Worley’s coached at Lakeland since 1998. The Lady Cavaliers have won every Southeastern District season title since 2000 and every district tournament since 2001.
