‘Joseph’ auditions set

The Biblical Joseph, his coat of many colors and even his vindictive brothers will be on stage at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts in March.
Before that, though, a large cast of both men and women ages 8 years and up are needed. Auditions for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be held Jan. 8 and 16.
“We’re always looking for a big, diverse cast,” Suffolk Center executive director Paul Lasakow said. “This is a great show because we can pretty much have as many roles as we want.”
The musical was created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the same team that produced “Cats.” The musical was first written for a school choir’s Easter concert in 1967. It grew to its current form through a number of iterations, which have become gradually longer over the years. It has enjoyed a successful run on Broadway, which began in 1982.
“It’s a great show, and it’s very, very appropriate to Suffolk,” Lasakow said. “It’s a Biblical story and told in a way that is both respectful and very lighthearted.”
The center is seeking a diverse cast, Lasakow said.
“It’s a great big mixture,” he said. “There’s adult roles, there’s kids’ roles, there’s in-between roles. That’s one of the great things about this show. Whatever you throw at the wall sticks.”
Performances for the show will be held March 5-6 and 12-13. The Saturday productions begin at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday’s shows start at 4 p.m.
Appointments to audition, while not required, may be made on a first-come, first-served basis. All experience levels are welcome. Each hopeful should bring a piece of music to perform no more than 90 seconds long. No headshots or monologues are required.
Lasakow encouraged anybody interested in auditioning to do so.
“It’s fun,” he said. “The show itself is a blast to produce and act in. It’s what we want to make the Suffolk Community Players about.”
Auditions will be held Jan. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon, and Jan. 16 from 2 to 6 p.m. They will be held at the center, 110 W. Finney Ave., on both days.
