Former teammates win conference hoops honors

Georgetown’s TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) earned her second Big East Player of the Week honor of this season and the fifth of her Lady Hoya career for averaging 21.5 points per game in two Lady Hoya wins last week.

Rodgers scored 30 points and made the go-ahead shot with less than a minute remaining on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. as No. 19 Georgetown beat No. 8 West Virginia 65-60.

Rodgers totaled 13 points and five assists in GU’s 59-41 win at Seton Hall Saturday. Rodgers, a sophomore guard, is averaging team highs with 18.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

The Lady Hoyas (17-5, 5-3) continue Big East play at Louisville Tuesday night.

Chowan junior Ransheda Jennings, a teammate of Rodgers for three varsity seasons with the Lady Bulldogs, was named the CIAA Player of the Week for the second straight week. The Lady Hawks (9-9, 6-4) went 3-0, with all three being conference wins, last week.

Jennings averaged 17.0 points a game and 6.3 rebounds per game in the three games. She had 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists as Chowan beat visiting Virginia Union 68-57 Saturday.

Jennings, a point guard for the Lady Hawks, leads Chowan in scoring, assists, steals and blocked shots.

Chowan hosted St. Paul’s Monday night. A home date versus Virginia State is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.

Suffolk track and field standouts now with Norfolk State and Virginia Tech had top finishes at the Penn State National Invitational over the weekend.

James

For the Spartans, sophomore James Taylor (Nansemond River) placed second in the 60-meter dash in a personal-best time of 6.66 seconds. Taylor cut 0.06 seconds off his best time, set a week earlier.

Taylor was on NSU’s victorious 4×400-meter relay team in the non-invite heat. The Spartans won in 3:10.37 and had the third-best time of the event.

NSU sophomore John James (Nansemond River) finished sixth in the high jump at 6-feet-8.75.

Virginia Tech junior Keith Ricks (King’s Fork) finished fourth in the invite section of the 200 in 21.67 and 10th in the 60 in 6.81 seconds.

Marquette’s men’s basketball team (14-8, 5-4) moved to a winning record in Big East play with a 76-70 win over No. 17 Syracuse (18-4, 5-4) in front of 19,032 spectators in Milwaukee Saturday.

Freshman Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) played eight minutes and scored two points for Marquette.

The Golden Eagles play at No. 12 Villanova Wednesday at 7 p.m.
