Suffolk businesses are participating in the Extreme Food Drive this weekend and next week to coincide with ABC TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

The show, which chooses deserving families with substandard housing, demolishes their home and builds a new one, is filming an episode in Virginia Beach with the Hill-Burdette family, which has six adopted daughters. The food drive is intended to build excitement for the show and will benefit area food banks.

“Hunger is a serious problem that gets ignored too often,” said Brian Williams, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront in downtown Suffolk. The hotel is one of several Suffolk businesses collecting for the food drive.

The hotel is collecting food 24 hours a day in its lobby through Feb. 11. People who drop off food Feb. 7-11 will have a chance to win one of five one-night stays with complimentary breakfast.

The food banks’ top 10 list of needed items is: peanut butter, chunky soups, canned meats, canned tuna, canned vegetables, juice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, pasta and pasta sauces.

“We are just glad to be a part of this great cause and will work hard to help the Extreme Food Drive meet its goal,” Williams said.
