Edith Beatrice Mitchell triumphantly entered into eternal rest with her heavenly Father on March 12, 2011 surrounded by family at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was the widow of Charles E. Mitchell and was born in Nansemond County, Va., to the late Samuel and Wisteria Wills. She was preceded in death by her son, Bernard L. Mitchell; sisters, Wisteria Wills and Fannie Hines; brothers, David Wills Sr. and Willie Wills.

Known as E.B. or “Bee” by close friends and family, Edith was very fashionable and elegant. She was also an accomplished soloist, gardener and seamstress.

Edith attended Booker T. Washington High School before graduating from East Suffolk High School and was a lifetime member of the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Association.

As a lifetime member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Edith was an active member of the Mitchell Memorial Sunday School Class, Polly Armstrong Missionary Circle, Chapel Choir and Mass Choir.

Edith is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Copeland and devoted son-in-law, Alvin Copeland; daughter-in-law, Teresa Mitchell; sisters, Shirley Darden-Brown and Evelyn Wills; aunt, Florence Williams; grandchildren Buryl L. Flythe Jr. (Luanna), Jamila Flythe-Taylor, Alvin Xavier Copeland, Evan Copeland, Ian Copeland, Charles Anthony Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Jada Taylor, Janii Taylor and Jalea Taylor; sisters-in-law, Ruth F. Mitchell and Celestine M. Mitchell; cousins, Ruth Richardson, Bessie Wills and Madeline Stokes; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Ms. Mitchell will be on view Friday, March 18, from noon to 5 p.m., and the family will receive guests from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A homegoing service will be held on Saturday, March 19 at Metropolitan Baptist Church.
