Va. Union sprinters keep going low

Former Lakeland track standout Johniqua Porter is part of an all-freshman 4-by-100 meter relay team which has shaved time off Virginia Union’s program record twice this outdoor track and field season.

The Lady Panthers set a new school record for the second straight weekend, winning at a meet at the University of Richmond in 49.28 seconds on March 26.

Porter teams with freshmen Shadiqua Hunt and G’Ana Robinson, both from Florida, and freshman Tishana Dorn of Maryland.

Boston College earned its second series sweep of the ACC softball season with a pair of wins over visiting N.C. State Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Lady Eagles (9-19, 5-3) won game one 5-3 in 14 innings (seven extra innings) and finished the sweep with a 2-0 win.

Wilkins

Junior third baseman/catcher Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 1-for-7 with a run in the 14-inning game. Wilkins is hitting .352 with 11 home runs, 26 RBI and 24 runs scored. Wilkins is tied for second in the conference in homers.

Norfolk State swept a MEAC baseball doubleheader Sunday in Baltimore, beating Coppin St. 15-2 and 9-2.

Outfielder and third-place hitter John Rasberry (Lakeland/Greenbrier Christian) combined to go 4-for-7 with three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases on the day.

NSU (10-16, 3-1) plays the Norfolk Tides, as the Tides warm-up for their triple-A season, Tuesday evening at Harbor Park. NSU plays at Old Dominion Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
