Warriors slugging, pitching at college level

Benedict senior Charae Rice (Nansemond River) was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week for the second time this softball season after another huge week at the plate.
Rice, a third baseman/shortstop, led the Lady Tigers (18-11) in a doubleheader sweep over Shaw, hitting .600 with a homer, two doubles, five RBI and four runs in the two games.
Freshman Rachel Hawks (Nansemond River) pitched the first two no-hitters in program history for Patrick Henry Community College softball in March and was named the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 31.
The Lady Patriots are 21-9 overall. Hawks is 12-4 with a 1.86 ERA.
Two Nansemond River baseball alums, Jermaine Berry and Erickson Keeton, are on Patrick Henry’s baseball team.
In a three-game sweep against Stanly C.C. last weekend, Berry went 10-for-11 at the plate with six runs and three RBI. In a 3-2, 10-inning win for the Patriots (19-10), Berry led off the bottom of the tenth with a triple and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Keeton’s hitting .379 in 10 games with a home run and six RBI. Berry’s hitting .437 with 33 runs, 20 RBI, four doubles and four triples.
Senior second baseman Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs as Boston College beat Bryant 16-5 on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
In a weather-shortened two-game series against Miami (Fla.) over the weekend, Hamlet went 3-for-5 with two runs against the Hurricanes. Hamlet’s hitting .274 on the season.
BC is 11-15 overall and 4-7 in the ACC.
