Former Lady Warrior nearing UVA-Wise records

Virginia-Wise’s Maddi Ridenour (Nansemond River) is closing in on many Highland Cavalier softball records during the final stretch of her senior season.

Ridenour’s been UVA-Wise’s centerfielder and leadoff hitter from the start of her freshman season, earning NAIA All-American and multiple all-conference honors during the past three years.

For the current season, Ridenour is hitting .376 with 30 runs scored in 39 games and 24 stolen bases. Ridenour’s committed one error on the season.

Ridenour is closing in on setting a new school record with her .380 career batting average, which would be a new record by nearly .020. With 224 career hits and 144 career runs, she’s two hits and 13 runs away from new program records. UVA-Wise (15-24) has at least 14 games left in its season.

Ridenour will graduate in May with a degree in health and physical education. Upon graduation, she plans to attend graduate school to pursue a degree in kinesiology.

Marshall centerfielder Isaac Ballou (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 2-for-6 with a run and a triple, his fourth triple of the season, as the Herd swept a doubleheader against visiting Coppin State, 9-0 and 3-2, on Wednesday.

For the season, Ballou’s hitting .282 with 25 runs and 17 RBI. In center, Ballou’s made one error in 91 fielding chances (.989 fielding percentage).

Marshall (13-18) hosts Conference USA foe Houston for three games this weekend.

VMI’s baseball team beat William and Mary 5-1 in Williamsburg on Wednesday. It was the first Keydet win in Williamsburg since 1996.

VMI senior Justin Topping (Nansemond River) doubled and scored in the fourth inning to give the Keydets a 1-0 lead. Topping’s hitting .339 on the season.

The Keydets (16-16-1, 5-7) return to Big South play this weekend with three games at Charleston Southern.

Mount Olive junior pitcher Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) pitched a four-hitter as the Lady Trojans beat Barton 10-1 in half of a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday.

Saunders has an 8-13 record on the season with 11 complete games, two shutouts, a 3.80 earned run average and 78 strikeouts in 121 innings.

Junior outfielder Katie Devenuto (Lakeland) has started 34 games for the Lady Trojans (22-25, 10-8 Conference Carolinas) and is hitting .260 with 11 sacrifices and 10 RBI.
