Volunteers set a fine example

To the editor:

It’s simple enough to tell our young people to do the right thing, to get involved with the community and to do right by others.

But when you put these words into action and practice them in your own life, it speaks volumes, and it makes you a positive role model to whom youth can relate and one they can strive to emulate.

Recently, the adult leaders of Cub Scout Pack 89 from Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Driver showed up to take care of some much needed yard work in a small downtown Suffolk community. They got to work edging the sidewalks, mowing the grass, trimming the overgrown hedges, weeding and mulching the flowerbeds.

All this effort was put forth by leaders who already commit so much of their time and energy to a group of Cub Scouts, not to mention their own families. Still, even with their busy schedules, they chose to dedicate time to do this for the grandparents of two of their young Scouts, to put into practice what they are trying to teach the young Scouts they choose to mentor.

These are the same leaders who helped the boys honor their mothers by assisting them in cooking and serving a Mothers Day pancake breakfast, followed by a day of river cleanup in Eclipse.

All of this time and effort unselfishly and freely given by a group of volunteer leaders provides a positive experience and a proper example for those who surely will be the leaders of tomorrow.

With all our hearts and praise, we thank these leaders for all they do and for how great our yard looks now.
