A Saturday afternoon crash on West Constance Road left one man dead and others injured.

The wreck occurred in the 300 block of West Constance Road just after 3 p.m. Saturday, city spokeswoman Debbie George said. A 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Russell James Crawford was traveling eastbound when it crossed the centerline into oncoming westbound traffic and sideswiped another vehicle.

Crawford, 42, of the 500 block of Virginia Avenue, suffered fatal injuries.

During the investigation, Crawford’s wife reported that her husband had slumped over the steering wheel just before the accident, George said. However, all indications are that Crawford died from the injuries he suffered as a result of the accident, she said.

Crawford’s wife was taken by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, while the driver of the other vehicle was taken by ambulance to Sentara Obici Hospital.
