A city firefighter recruit was arrested and charged with driving a stolen vehicle drunk, according to Suffolk police.
Robert Hodges III, 24, of Smithfield, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a license and grand theft auto, according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.
Police say that just before 10 p.m. on Monday, Suffolk dispatchers received several calls from citizens reporting a vehicle being operated in a reckless manner. An officer, after spotting the vehicle pulling into Burger King on Bridge Road, pulled into the lot, George said.
The driver attempted to drive behind the police vehicle and the suspect’s vehicle brushed the corner of the police car, George said.
Hodges was found to be under the influence of alcohol, George said. The owner of the vehicle he was driving had reported it as stolen, she added.
At the time of his arrest, Hodges was a firefighter recruit with Suffolk Fire and Rescue. He was in the academy phase of training and was off duty. As of Tuesday, he is no longer employed with the fire department, George said.
