NR defense ousts Presidents

Passer: Nansemond River quarterback Alex Kase completed three passes with two of them going for touchdowns as the Warriors beat Wilson 22-3 Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Kase connected with Brandon Roberts and Willie Gillus for the touchdown plays. The Warriors (1-0) play at Grassfield this coming Friday.

Nansemond River 22, Wilson 3

After the visiting Presidents (0-2) got a field goal in the first quarter, the Warriors (1-0) took the lead for good with Alex Kase passing to Brandon Roberts on a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

LaMont Brown carried for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 13-3 NR at halftime. Brown went on to gain 122 rushing yards. Kase threw his second touchdown pass, this one to tight end Willie Gillus for a 30-yard score, in the third period.

The Warriors held the Presidents to seven first downs and -18 rushing yards. Corinth Cross intercepted two President passes.

Nansemond River matches its win total from 2010 on the opening Friday night of this season. The Warriors start district play Friday at Grassfield.

First Flight 30, Nansemond-Suffolk 16

The Saints moved out to a 10-0 halftime lead in their first game under new head coach Lew Johnston in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

The Seahawks (2-0) rallied in a big way with 30 points in the second half. First Flight reached the regional playoffs in North Carolina’s 2A group last season.

NSA (0-1) has its home opener against Christchurch on Friday.
