Cavaliers romp to 3-0

Lakeland’s Raekwon Johnson, normally the Cavalier running back, rushed for three touchdowns and passed for three touchdowns while filling in at quarterback as the Cavaliers won 47-21 versus Maury in Norfolk Friday night. Lakeland (3-0) hosts Western Branch in a Southeastern District game this coming Friday.

Lakeland 47, Maury 21

Raekwon Johnson, Lakeland’s starting running back, threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three touchdowns after quarterback Zach Super left the game injured in the first quarter Friday night at Norfolk’s Powhatan Field.

The Commodores led 15-6 in the first quarter, before the Cavaliers scored the next five touchdowns to gain a 40-15 lead in the fourth period.

Johnson was 8-for-13 passing for 197 yards. Antonio Jefferson caught six passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Anaquan Peterson caught six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson rushed for touchdowns of 3, 4 and 5 yards.

Jefferson’s caught two touchdown passes in each game this season. Johnson has eight rushing TDs, three passing TDs and one receiving touchdown total.

The Cavaliers gained 242 yards passing and 167 yards rushing. The Cavalier defense caused five Maury turnovers and gave up seven rushing yards on 24 Maury runs.

Lakeland (3-0, 2-0) is averaging 43.0 points per game. The Cavs host Western Branch (1-2, 1-1) Friday at 7 p.m.

Norfolk Christian 28, Nansemond-Suffolk 21

Norfolk Christian’s Mekel Watson and Wil Wahee connected for a 41-yard touchdown pass with four seconds left to give the Ambassadors a Tidewater Conference victory Friday at Nansemond-Suffolk.

Four Ambassador touchdowns overcame NSA’s 21-0 halftime lead for Norfolk Christian’s first victory in its series against the Saints.

Bobby Lamm put NSA ahead with its first drive, scoring on a 5-yard run. Quarterback Jackson DeMello scored on an 11-yard touchdown run. Lamm scored NSA’s third touchdown with a 22-yard run. Lamm finished with 81 yards on 15 carries.

Norfolk Christian’s offense tallied 22 rushing yards and 298 passing yards.

The Saints (0-3, 0-1) continue in conference play hosting Bishop Sullivan on Friday evening.
