The newest addition to the Harbour View East shopping center, Dick’s Sporting Goods, will open Wednesday. A grand opening weekend with giveaways and special guests begins Friday.

A new retail outlet in North Suffolk will hold a grand opening celebration this week complete with giveaways, NFL stars and more.

Dick’s Sporting Goods will open its newest location in Harbour View East to its first customers on Wednesday.

Ryan Ross, community marketing manager for Dick’s, said the company is thrilled about the new store.

“I think the big thing we’re excited about is being a part of the community,” he said. “We’re excited, and we’re ready to get things rolling.”

While Dick’s is opening for the first time Wednesday, the store, located on College Drive, will kick off its grand opening weekend Friday. Giveaways and special guests will be featured throughout the weekend.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 8 a.m. Friday as the first of the weekend’s festivities, and free Adidas T-shirts will be given out to customers on Friday while supplies last.

On Saturday, the first 100 customers, 18 years or older, will receive a free pair of adult-sized Crocs, and from noon to 2 p.m., former NFL quarterback Aaron Brooks will be at the store for an autograph signing.

Then, on Sunday, the first 100 customers will be given a mystery gift card that holds an amount ranging from $5 to $500, and Reebok T-shirts will be handed out while supplies last. Also, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor will sign autographs from noon to 2 p.m.

“Dick’s Sporting Goods’ decision to open its first store in Suffolk demonstrates great confidence in our city’s future and serves as the latest evidence that major companies and organizations continue to invest in our city,” said Suffolk Mayor Linda T. Johnson. “Suffolk is gaining new jobs and new shopping opportunities; it’s also gaining a terrific neighbor and corporate citizen.”

Ross said he think Dick’s is filling a need for a sporting goods store in Suffolk.

“There’s no other stores in that area to go to for sporting goods,” he said. “I think the community is excited about having a store in their backyard to go to and not have to cross any bridges.”

The Harbour View store is the 21st Dick’s location in Virginia. The next closest Dick’s locations to Suffolk are in Newport News and Virginia Beach.
