School officials, raise the bar

To the editor:
I find myself in complete agreement with your Oct. 4 editorial, “Raising expectations.”
It is a disservice to our young people to tout school accreditation as a high goal. In order to compete against students from India, China, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, and a long list of other countries that score higher in testing on math and science, students need to be better than the minimum set by the commonwealth of Virginia.
How to get them there is the challenge of our age. The elected School Board needs to require more of the staff; the staff needs to be more effective; and parents need to be more focused, responsible, and somehow more accountable.
