Former Cav goes low at Nationals

Lakeland alum and Apprentice School sophomore Ben Hunter carded rounds of 73 and 75 to finish third in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) Golf Nationals at the Penn State University Blue Course in State College, Pa., on Monday and Tuesday.

Hunter won the USCAA national championship last fall as a freshman at the same course.

Hunter’s one-over-par round of 73 in the first round put him one shot behind the lead. Southern Maine’s Tommy Stirling shot a four-under-par 68 in the second round to wind up winning by four strokes. The Builders finished third as a team.

Hunter earned USCAA All-American honors for the second straight year. Hunter’s the first Builder golfer to win consecutive All-American awards since current Builder coach B.J. Maben did so with three All-American seasons from 2005-07.
