HAMPTON — With the stress and strain of a long NASCAR points campaign now in the rearview mirror, Langley Speedway lets loose this Sunday as the track closes out its 2011 racing schedule with the Sixth Annual “Day of Destruction” — always one of the most popular dates on the calendar.
Sunday’s lineup includes: a 50-lap Enduro Race, a Reverse Race, a Flag Pole Race, a Bag Race, a Train Race, an Appliance Race, a Tug of War competition, a Burnout contest and two demolition derbies — one for domestic cars and one for imports. A grand total of $5,000 in posted awards will be on the line in the 10 events.
Front gates and pit gates open at 11 a.m. The afternoon’s first feature tilt, the Reverse Race, goes green at 1 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Military personnel (active-duty or retired) and seniors (60+) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Family Packs, which include two adult and two kids tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
The U.S. Marine Corps 4th Supply Battalion returns to Langley to accept donations for the Toys For Tots drive.
Fans and competitors are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy and brighten the holidays for needy children.
This year’s track champions and other top performers from the 2011 season will be feted at Langley Speedway’s annual awards gala, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront on Constance Road.
The evening’s festivities get under way at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner, the awards ceremony and music. Tickets are $45 each and are on sale now. For complete details, contact the Speedway office at 865-RACE. The deadline for ticket purchases is Wednesday.
