A Suffolk man gambled $40 on Virginia Lottery scratcher tickets and walked away a multi-millionaire.

Tony Nozar bought two Virginia’s $5 Million Club tickets that day at a 7-Eleven store on Portsmouth Boulevard in Chesapeake. One was a bust, but the other turned out to be the ticket that would change his life.

Tony Nozar was the lucky winner of $5 million from a Virginia Lottery scratcher ticket.

“I ran back in the store and hugged the clerk,” Nozar later told Virginia Lottery officials. “He said, ‘Did you win?’ I said, ‘Yes!’”

On Friday, he returned to the store to accept his prize from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store also received a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

Nozar had a choice between taking the full $5 million over 25 years or an immediate cash option of $3.21 million. He chose the annuity, which means he’ll collect about $200,000 per year before taxes.

Nozar is a delivery driver and said he will use the winnings to buy a house.

If you envy Nozar, you’re in luck — two $5 million tickets remain unclaimed in the Virginia’s $5 Million Club game, as do six $1 million tickets.
