To the editor:

Congratulations to Coach Spencer Mayfield on his career achievements and induction into the Virginia Basketball Hall of Fame.

I want to personally thank him for the wonderful help in mentoring and being a good role model for many of his players, including my son, Darryl Butler, who is now the assistant head basketball coach at Virginia State University.

Coach Mayfield also has inspired several of his former basketball players to become coaches or basketball officials.

Coach Mayfield sets the example for a village taking responsibility to raise a child. I will always be grateful for his guidance and dedication. His good work will always be remembered by his family, players and friends. Kudos!
