Warriors win Fall League hoop title

As part of prepping for the upcoming basketball season, Nansemond River won the Hampton Roads Fall League championship, beating district rival Western Branch 59-51 in the final game, two weeks ago at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.

As the Warriors work to build on last season, in which Nansemond River won the Southeastern District season championship, reached the Eastern Region quarterfinals and finished 21-6 overall, the fall league title goes with two more team camp titles won over the summer.

The Warriors won the tournaments at the Virginia Wesleyan Team Camp and Heritage Team Camp. The Warriors finished the fall league 12-2.

Senior center John Joyce led the Warriors with 12 points and seven rebounds in the victory over Western Branch.

The Warriors had to come back after the Bruins led 27-22 at halftime.

In the Warrior backcourt, Dontrell Brite had 11 points and four assists and Shannon Evans had 11 points.

Michael Copeland added eight points and Jay Melendez scored seven points.

Eighteen squads from around the region playing in the Hampton Roads Fall League.

Nansemond River’s regular season opens on Dec. 2 when the Warriors will host Grassfield for a district game.
