Ramp Jam raises money for skate park

A fundraiser held on Saturday raised nearly $1,900 to help with upkeep of the skateboarding and BMX ramps at Nike Park in Carrollton.
The first-ever Ramp Jam brought in $1,896. The park is partially funded by the county, but additional money is needed for other improvements.
The park was closed for a couple years because of unsafe ramp conditions. Funding from the county as well as a donation from Isle of Wight Amateur Athletics enabled the park to reopen in 2009.
A group of children, ages 12 to 16, who regularly use the park approached the amateur athletics association and the county’s Parks and Recreation staff with the idea of the Ramp Jam. The group is working with the county and other users on the future of the park, including needed improvements, ramp material choices, site design and funding.
The Ramp Jam raised its money through admission fees and competition entry fees. About 200 people showed up to cheer on the 58 skaters and bikers.
The group also is seeking sign sponsors for signs to install at the park. Large signs are available for $250, small signs are available for $150, and a line on a multi-recognition sign is $50. The group also is planning a spring Ramp Jam for March or April.
Sponsors for this event included Blue Horseshoe Tattoo (over $800 in cash prizes); Profile Racing; Jimmy & Crystal Crawford of Hooker Bikes; Lonnie at NLC Enterprises (T-shirts); Justin Waddell of M.B.C. BMX & SK8 Shop; Mike of Bike West in Suffolk; Papa John’s (Eagle Harbor); WRV; Pagan River Outfitters; IWAASports; and Isle of Wight County Department of Parks and Recreation.
The group’s officers are: Cody Ryan, 16, president; Colin Pittman, 15, vice president 1; Patrick Scott, 15, vice president 2; Jake Ryan, 13, treasurer; Clayton Ippolito, 13, historian; Grayson Ippolito, 12, BMX marketing representative; Daniel Gould, 14, skateboarding marketing representative.
