Jethro Haslett Piland, 92, passed away peacefully Dec. 6, 2011, surrounded by his family and friends. He was the son of the late Blanche and Solomon Piland. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Boyce Piland; a son, Stephen Martin Piland, brother, Gordon Alexander Piland; and sister, Genevieve Piland Baker.

He was a member of the Turner Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served for 18 years as a captain in the Virginia National Guard and was promoted to Major prior to retirement. He was also retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Virginia State Inspection Services.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Jethro H. Piland Jr. and wife Anne, of Old Church, Va., and Dean Piland and wife Vonnie, of Suffolk; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, S.A. Pylan, of Windsor; and dear friends David and Joyce Fulgham, of Suffolk.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Tim W. Rawls. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W.
