ABC plans new store

Suffolk will soon have a new ABC store.
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control will open a store in the Farm Fresh shopping center on Bridge Road.
Jennifer Farinholt, a spokeswoman for ABC, said the store, which will be located next to El Burrito Mexican Restaurant, will open sometime next month.
“We don’t yet have a firm opening date,” she said. “However, we anticipate it will be early January.”
This is the second ABC store in North Suffolk — the other is on Hampton Roads Parkway. When the new store opens, Suffolk will have four ABC retail locations.
Farinholt said in deciding to open new locations, the department considers a variety of statistics about an area, including population density, sales data from other stores in the region and the distance of the proposed location from other ABC stores.
“We want to provide customer service, and we analyze the demand,” she said.
Farinholt said the store will encompass 2,800 square feet and carry about 1,200 products.
She said the new store already has its shelves up, and over the next couple of weeks, it will get inventory and have cash registers installed.
Kevin Hughes, director of economic development for Suffolk, said he thinks the new store will help ABC better accommodate North Suffolk.
“This will allow them to cover a growing market,” he said.
Hughes said the opening of an ABC store is similar to other retailers, but there is one big difference.
“They are different, as they don’t pay a business license,” he said. “They are dealing with a different kind of commodity.”
Though the store won’t contribute taxes, Hughes believes it will be a good fit in the shopping center.
“(Shopping centers) try to line up tenants that complement each other,” he said. “The goal is to have them stop at one or two of the stores. ABC aligning themselves with a supermarket really makes a lot of sense.”
