Tow-to-Go offered on NYE

Partygoers who have too much to drink this weekend have an option to get themselves and their cars home safely.
AAA Tidewater Virginia will once again offer its Tow-to-Go service through 6 a.m. on Jan. 1. The service is available to anyone — even people who are not AAA members — and is free thanks to sponsorships by Anheuser-Busch and Hoffman Beverage Company.
“Our single most important goal is public safety,” said Katharine Beachboard, a community educator for public affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. “We want to get every individual and their vehicle home safely.”
The service offers one-way service for drivers who have had too much to drink. This marks the seventh year the service, which includes towing the car and giving the driver a ride, has been offered in the area.
“We want motorists to be aware of the high crash risk from drinking and driving associated with holidays and encourage them to think twice about getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking,” AAA Tidewater Virginia spokeswoman Georjeane Blumling said in a press release.
Blumling added that many revelers do not seek alternative ways of getting home, because they are concerned about retrieving their vehicle, the expense of taxis, the inconvenience of alternative transportation and more. Using the Tow-to-Go service solves those problems.
The service is offered within the greater Hampton Roads area only. The drunken driver is the only one who gets a ride. He must have the keys to the vehicle and be at the vehicle when the tow truck arrives. Service is provided directly to the driver’s home only — “in other words, not to another bar or party,” Beachboard said.
In addition, vehicles such as oversized trucks or recreational vehicles cannot be towed.
Last year, 35 people used the service in Hampton Roads, Beachboard said.
“We’re expecting more calls this year,” she added.
The service is not meant to be a substitute for advance planning such as choosing a designated driver, Beachboard said.
To obtain service, call 757-631-1700. The call should be placed by the drinking driver or his passengers, a bartender, restaurant manager or party host.
