With a career night unto itself, Winthrop senior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) became the 19th player in Eagle basketball history to surpass 1,000 career points in his 33-point effort in a 92-86 overtime loss at Georgia Tuesday night.

Jones set a career high by four points as the Eagles gave the SEC’s Bulldogs a major fight.

Winthrop led by five with 0:21 left in overtime. Georgia’s Gerald Robinson tied the game with a lay-up with 2.4 seconds left. The Bulldogs took the lead and stayed in front throughout the overtime period.

Jones made 10 of 15 field goals including 4 of 6 three-pointers, while going 9-of-9 at the foul line.

“This was certainly the best game of Andre’s career,” said Winthrop head coach Randy Peele.

“That’s right up there with the top performances ever for a Winthrop basketball player. It’s amazing, honestly, the shots that he makes with such a small margin of when the shot is open,” Peele said.

The Eagles (4-9, 1-1) had a Big South game against UNC-Asheville (6-6, 1-0) Saturday.

Chowan senior Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) became the fourth player in CU history to eclipse 1,000 career points on Dec. 18.

Jennings scored 21 points in Chowan’s 54-52 win over Bloomfield to get to 1,016 career points. Jennings also had nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in the game. The CIAA named Jennings the conference’s Player of the Week for that week.

“What a special person, what a special student and what a special player,” said Chowan head coach Patrick Mashuda.

“A 4.0 in the classroom and 1,000 points in the same semester, that’s pretty amazing. I am blessed every day to coach her.” Mashuda said.

Jennings is averaging 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

The Lady Hawks play at Johnson C. Smith in a CIAA game Wednesday evening.

Sugar Rodgers, King’s Fork’s all-time leading scorer, set all sorts of records in leading Georgetown to two victories at the 35th Annual Blue Sky Classic in Hanover, N.H. last week.

Rodgers set tournament records for points in a game, points in a tournament (73) and three-pointers made in a tournament (11).

“I was mad that I missed a free throw to beat (my career high) yesterday (versus Vermont), so I told my trainer (Melissa Robinson) that I was going to go out and break it tonight,” Rodgers said.

“I was just having fun. We just came back from a break and I was energetic and ready to play,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers, a junior, is averaging 20.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. She was named Big East Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and her third time this season to go with her tournament MVP honor at the Blue Sky Classic.
