An exciting new event

It’s not often that you have a chance to do something good for seven different nonprofit organizations for the cost of just one night’s entertainment. On Saturday, though, Suffolk residents will have just that opportunity, as the Nansemond River Pilot Club presents its first Southern Hospitality Gala, starting at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn downtown.

Widely known in Suffolk for its annual Womanless Beauty Contest, held in support of the American Cancer Society’s Suffolk Rockin’ Relay for Life, the Pilot Club chose to make a change in its fundraising and nonprofit support this year. The popular pageant will continue this year under the direction of several Pilot Club members, but the club itself has turned its attention to what could wind up being an even bigger project — one that could benefit an even broader array of people and organizations around Suffolk.

The Southern Hospitality Gala, a semi-formal event with a sit-down dinner, dancing and a silent auction, will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Project Lifesaver, the Social Butterflies Club, March of Dimes, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, the American Cancer Society and the Children’s Center.

Among the nonprofit organizations to receive the club’s support will be Project Lifesaver, which provides tracking devices for children and adults who have disabilities that make them inclined to wander, and the Social Butterflies Club, which provides language and social skills therapy for children with speech and language delays or disorders as well as autism spectrum disorders. All seven will be worthy recipients.

The gala will be a great way to snap out of the winter blues, while helping others in the process. Tickets for the Southern Hospitality Gala are $40 each and include two drink tickets. To purchase tickets, call 539-9988 and ask for Becky Adams or Nancy Rountree.
