While the 2012 Southeastern District Track and Field Championship featured some positives and negatives, star performers emerged Wednesday night at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

Nansemond River High School had several reasons to cheer. Brandon Roberts won the boys high jump with a 6’-2” jump, Mia McClain raced to a thrilling win in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.21 seconds, and Kieaira Middleton’s 1:20.62 time claimed first in the 500-meter dash.

In the relay races, the Warriors captured the top spot for the girls 4×200 with a time of 1:45.72, and their boys also won the 4×200, with a 1:33.27 time.

“We have our ups and downs,” Nansemond River coach Franco Britt said. “But overall, [we’re] doing well.”

The 4×400 boys relay was shaping up to be a dramatic contest between Kings Fork and Nansemond River, with qualifying times less than a second apart.

“[The 4×400] can determine second or third place,” Britt said before the event.

He was right. Grassfield High School won the event with a 3:30.74 time, and its boys team took second place overall for the night. The Bulldogs took second in the 4×400, while the Warriors placed fourth.

And how did Lakeland do for the night?

“Way better than I expected,” Cavaliers coach Gregory Rountree said. “Some mishaps happened here and there, but I’m 100 percent satisfied.”

Lakeland’s Anaquan Peterson distinguished himself by winning both the long jump (23’-2.25”) and the triple jump (44’-7.25”).

The Albright twins, Jamee and Alexis, helped power the Cavaliers to a victory in the 4×800 with a time of 10:16.59.

While Kings Fork did not have any first-place finishers, coach Kisha Ricks still had reason for optimism.

“A lot of my kids did their personal best in different events,” she said. “Improving and going on to outdoor (track and field), our chances are looking better and better each day.”

The Eastern Region Indoor Track Championships take place next Friday and Saturday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
