A hog truck loaded with pigs headed for slaughter overturned in the 1900 block of Buckhorn Drive on Monday.

The driver, Alan Jay Beasley, 34, of Laurinburg, N.C., was charged with reckless driving and failure to obey a highway sign that prohibits through trucks on that stretch of road.

The Murphy-Brown LLC truck ran off the right side of the roadway and rolled onto its side, said a city spokeswoman. The accident occurred about 1:17 p.m.

Beasley received minor injuries. Suffolk Fire and Rescue workers had to cut and remove the truck’s windshield to extricate Beasley from the truck. He was treated on the scene then transported to Sentara Obici Hospital.

Buckhorn Drive was closed between Indian Trial and Old Myrtle Road for several hours while the accident was cleared from the roadway.

A spokesperson for Murphy-Brown did not return a message left after business hours Monday.
