The Rev. Michael and Carmen Halley of the Suffolk Christian Church Team load coolers in their car to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels.

Suffolk Meals on Wheels is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a fundraiser this week.

The second annual Rocky Hock Opry will be held on March 9 at King’s Fork Middle School. Tickets are a $15 donation and available at a number of local businesses.

Last year, more than 44,000 meals were delivered to 217 recipients in Suffolk and the surrounding area by 295 volunteers.

Many homebound seniors and disabled residents depend on the meal delivery for their nutrition. Meals on Wheels provides not only two meals a day but also the security of remaining in their own home and knowing that a caring volunteer will check on them daily.

Meals on Wheels receives money from grants, donations and recipient fees. It receives no financial assistance from the government, nor is it a United Way agency. Contributions to Meals on Wheels are tax-deductible.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary, the Rocky Hock Opry will provide music, comedy and a good time for a good cause.

No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are available at the Meals on Wheels office at Sentara Obici Hospital; Beale & Curran PC in Smithfield; Windsor Pharmacy in Windsor; Nationwide Insurance on West Washington Street; Farmers Hardware in Holland, Dwight Bradshaw, DDS on Bennett’s Pasture Road; and Billy Smith at 925-4541.
