‘Super Tuesday’ primaries today
Published 7:57 pm Monday, March 5, 2012
Polls will be open today for Virginia’s Republican presidential primary. Virginia is one of 10 states holding “Super Tuesday” nominating contests.
Only two candidates will be on the ballot, even though four are still in the race.
Only U.S. Representative Ron Paul and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney met the requirements to be on the ballot.
Those hoping to vote for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Sen. Rick Santorum will be out of luck, as they failed to file the required number of signatures and subsequently lost a lawsuit to be on the ballot.
Write-in votes are not allowed in Virginia primaries, so Paul and Romney are the only two options. According to a notice placed on the State Board of Elections’ website, no “defacement of an official ballot” — including writing in the name of any other candidate on the blank area of the ballot — will be counted as a vote for anyone.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Despite a redistricting proposal currently going through the approval process, voters should go to their normal polling places, as the new locations have yet to be approved.
If you are unsure of your voting location, check your voter information card or visit the State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov. You also can verify your voter registration status at the same website.
