There’s a big day coming

If you’re planning to go anywhere in Suffolk on April 21, don’t.
I’m just kidding. But, just as fair warning, the roads will be closed or clogged up in many areas of the city as a variety of fundraising events will be holding bike rides or walks that day.
The one with the biggest impact on traffic will be the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure. The biggest fundraiser for the diabetes association, the Tour de Cure will take bicycle riders on four different routes throughout Suffolk. Riders can choose either a 10-, 30-, 65- or 100-mile route. The 100-mile course, which is only for experienced and well-trained bicyclists, will start at King’s Fork High School and wind through Windsor, Holland and Whaleyville before ending back at the high school.
The ride and other lead-up events have generated a significant amount of coverage in the Suffolk News-Herald lately, and with good reason.
Statistics show that Suffolk and Western Tidewater have some of the highest rates of diabetes and diabetes complications in the entire state. Considering the disease is completely preventable — for one of its types, anyway — and highly manageable with early diagnosis and proper education and treatment, there’s no reason that our area should have such high rates.
The Tour de Cure is a cause that hits home for me, because my longtime boyfriend, several family members and a few friends have one type or the other.
For more information on the Tour de Cure, or to register for it, visit www.diabetes.org/hamptonroadsvatour. That’s also where you can view maps of the routes so you can find the best way to get to your destination, whether you’re visiting the tour start/finish line or some other place in Suffolk.
Also that day, the Bon Secours 5K for Colon Cancer and 1-Mile Fun Walk will raise money for the Bon Secours Foundation Cancer Care Fund. It will wind through the Harbour View neighborhoods.
Find more information or register for the event at www.bshr.com/colonrun.
And finally, the Walk for Life to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Centers of Tidewater also will be held that morning in the downtown area.
The Crisis Pregnancy Centers aim to encourage mothers to choose life when they have an unexpected pregnancy. Its location in Suffolk and other facilities throughout South Hampton Roads offer pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, support groups, material support of diapers, clothes and other baby needs, and many other services.
Register or find more information at www.cpcfriends.org.
And keep your eyes open if you’re on the road April 21. You’ll be sharing it with a lot of people out to do something good for their community.
