Vernon Thomas Pope

Elder Vernon Thomas Pope, 86, passed away peacefully in his home April 12, 2012, in Newport News, Va. He was born April 7, 1926 and was a native of Nansemond County and the son of the late William Henry Pope and Inez Sears Pope. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Virginia Lee Colander, brothers Willie Pope, Linwood Pope, Floyd “Dick” Pope, James Pope; and two sisters, Ethel Pope and Mamie Brown.

He retired as a boiler attendant with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 30 years of dedicated service and also served in World War II.

His memory and legacy will be cherished by his loving wife and best friend of over 70 years, Ruby Pope, of Newport News, Va.; daughter, Lovular Hunter (Kenneth), of Hampton, Va.; five grandchildren, Paula Nelson (Keith), Vera Colander, Deric Colander (Tina), Tonjykua Stagg and Kenneshia Bacon (Ian); 14 great-grandchildren and 14-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial homegoing service will be held at noon Saturday, April 21, at Christ Church Apostolic, 39 Joynes Road, Hampton, VA 23666. The family will accept friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 20 at 278 Anne Drive, Newport News, VA 23601.
