Lakeland High School was evacuated early Friday after a custodian reported smelling gas in the kitchen.

The fire department was called at 6:30 a.m. and the building was cleared for students and staff to return at 7:30 a.m., Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said in an email.

In a phone interview, Bradshaw said the incident played out without panic. “Everything was fine,” she said.
