Two Suffolk car dealerships are holding events this Saturday to benefit various nonprofit organizations.
Starr Motors, 2584 Pruden Blvd., will hold an off-road day and car show behind the dealership from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Relay for Life.
In addition, Mike Duman Auto Sales, 2300 Godwin Blvd., will host Operation KidSafe, fire department child safety seat checks and an adopt-a-thon by Suffolk Animal Control and the Suffolk Humane Society from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Joe Bonney, the service manager at Starr Motors, said he and two other employees, Tommy Galbreath and Dave Davidson, came up with the idea of the off-road day five years ago.
The dealership used to put together a team for Relay for Life and one year hit upon the idea of a car show. But the next year, they decided to add to the car show idea with an off-road trail in the woods behind the dealership.
“We had the whole lot set up, even had a food vendor, and all of a sudden everybody was in the woods playing on the trail,” he said. “Obviously, we figured out what more people want to do.”
The next year, they simply moved everything behind the building. There’s still a car show, but the off-road trail is the main event, he said.
The cost to participate is $15 for the show, $25 for the trail or $30 for both. Spectators are free.
The off-road trail includes rocks, logs, hills, mud puddles and many other obstacles, Bonney said. Vulcan Materials has donated more than 100 tons of rock to help form the course.
In addition, raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day for a variety of prizes donated by local businesses, and food concessions will be available.
They’re expecting about 800 people throughout the day, he said. Last year, they raised around $3,500 for Relay.
“The Relay for Life obviously hits a little closer to home every year,” Bonney said. “We know it’s a good cause and it’s a good reason to get together.”

At Duman’s place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Operation KidSafe will fingerprint and take photos of children and give parents a sheet they can keep and give to law enforcement in the event of the child going missing.
“It’s like a child safety kit,” Duman said.
In addition, the fire department will check child safety seats to ensure they are installed correctly, and the safety house also will be there, Duman said.
In addition, adoptable animals from Suffolk Animal Control and Suffolk Humane Society will be on site to meet prospective new families.
