Events throughout Suffolk this weekend will honor veterans as the nation celebrates Memorial Day.
Kicking off the weekend’s events, the Suffolk chapter No. 173 United Daughters of the Confederacy will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The guest speaker will be Patrick Falci, historical advisor for the movies “Gettysburg” and “Gods & Generals.” Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
Also on Saturday, the second annual “Jumping for a Purpose” will be held at Skydive Suffolk. Hosted by Troopswap and Wounded Wear, the event at the Suffolk Executive Airport will allow about 50 wounded service members to skydive. The event begins with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. both days, with skydiving held from 9 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Entertainment, refreshments, activities, vendors and more will be part of the event, and the public is invited.
At 10 a.m. on Monday, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road. Sponsored by American Legion Post 88, the ceremony will feature speeches by Mayor Linda T. Johnson and U.S. Navy Capt. Daniel Shulz.
American flags will be placed on all gravesites at the cemetery. As part of the ceremony, representatives from various organizations will place wreaths at the committal shelter.
Cemetery staff also will be available to help visitors locate gravesites. Military service members and veterans can file pre-applications for future burial in the cemetery.
Also on Monday, a ceremony will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m., sponsored by the American Legion Post 57. Allen Lancaster, a retired military chaplain, will speak. There also will be a wreath-laying ceremony at each of the war monuments in the cemetery.
In addition, Carver Memorial Cemetery, 2320 E. Washington St., will hold a service at 11 a.m. Bishop Ted Thomas Sr. and the Harmonic Tones Quartet of Suffolk will be featured.
