The Suffolk police officer seriously assaulted after a May 19 traffic stop was released from the hospital last week, a family member said Tuesday.
Officer James Winslow is “recovering and resting,” said his uncle, Chris Jones.
Winslow was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after the attack in the woods off Nansemond Parkway. He had severe injuries to his head, face, shoulder and arm.
Suspect Joe Louis Staton, 43, of Portsmouth, faces a host of felony charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. He is due in court Aug. 20.
Staton is accused of beating Winslow, 27, after Winslow conducted a traffic stop on him about 8:25 a.m. that day. According to police, Winslow noticed a red Ford Expedition that had been reported stolen from Norfolk. He initiated a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Nansemond Parkway, and the driver immediately bailed from the vehicle and ran into the woods.
Winslow pursued him, but dispatchers lost radio contact with him. Other officers arriving at the scene to assist found him unconscious in the woods. Staton was apprehended after a seven-hour manhunt.
Jones, his uncle, wouldn’t reveal any details about Winslow’s recovery other than to say he is progressing.
“He still has a long road of recovery ahead,” Jones said. “We’re thankful that he’s here. God still has His hand firmly on James.”
