Free haircuts for kids this summer

A local barber shop is taking its work to the streets this summer — for free.
The first Monday of each month, the mobile location of The Chop Shop will visit Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority neighborhoods to provide free haircuts to children between ages 1 and 12. Donations will be accepted, but they are not required.
“We want to make sure everybody is taken care of,” said Antonio Smith, the vice president of TCS Boyz. “If it goes great, we’re going to keep it up.”
The first location will be at Cypress Manor/Parker Riddick on July 2. Following that, Hoffler Apartments will be done on Aug. 6; Colander Bishop Meadows on Sept. 3; and Chorey Park on Oct. 1, which will be a special visit for the elderly residents.
Smith said the organization wants to help out the families who may not be able to afford professional haircuts.
No “fancy” haircuts will be provided, Smith said. “The haircuts will be regular haircuts.”
Any donations that are given will go toward purchasing school supplies for the annual school supply giveaway, Smith said. In addition, people obtaining the haircuts must live in the community.
“We want to be fair to everyone,” he said.
In addition to the free haircuts and the upcoming school supply giveaway, the organization also is holding a dinner on July 29, participating in a charity softball game and taking part in a motorcycle ride on Sept. 16 to prevent domestic abuse.
