Campaign finance reports for local candidates in the period surrounding the November election reveal heavy spending on advertising and reimbursements for poll workers, especially for those in heavily contested races.

Mayor Linda T. Johnson, who emerged victorious in the mayor’s race, was the most prodigious, dropping more than $33,000 to Creative Direct for direct-mail fliers on Nov. 25.

She also gave $100 to each of 16 poll workers and spent $400 on lunch and breakfast for them, as well as $1,300 on food and beverages for her victory party at The First Lady.

Her challenger, Leroy Bennett, had more poll workers and paid them better. A total of 56 poll workers received payments of $125 each.

The Nansemond Borough race proved neither incumbency nor spending a lot of money guarantees a candidate the election. Robert Barclay spent $12,837 in the waning days of the campaign, but challenger Lue Ward won after spending less than a tenth of that amount during this reporting period, which lasted from Oct. 25 to Nov. 29.

In the Sleepy Hole Borough, eventual winner Roger Fawcett paid $16,650 to Creative Direct for mailings. One of his competitors, Raymond Batton, spent only $9,200 during the period, mostly on advertising and consulting.

In the Whaleyville Borough, incumbent Curtis Milteer paid $110 each to 13 poll workers, even though he was unopposed.
