Rainer Marfio’s tip-in with 20 seconds left lifted Isle of Wight Academy to a 55- 54 win Thursday over StoneBridge School in the quarterfinals round of the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament at Denbigh Baptist.
IWA was set to play Atlantic Shores at 6 p.m. Friday in one of the semifinal games. The two teams split their regular-season games.
IWA began the fourth quarter trailing by four, 43-39, then re-took the lead on two foul shots by Casey Williams with 5:33 left. StoneBridge claimed a late advantage, 54-53, on Alec Ferley’s basket with 33 seconds left. With one final chance to tie or win the game, StoneBridge inbounded the ball with 15.8 seconds left, worked the ball up-court and got a shot off, but missed.
This is the fifth consecutive year IWA has won 20 games or more in a season — a school record. The win also broke a season-long futility string against StoneBridge, which had beaten the Chargers both times they played this year.
IWA’s Nathan Sivertson led all scorers with 26 points; Marfio finished with 10.
