Group walk encourages life

A hot-air balloon ride will be the featured entertainment at an April event in Suffolk, but the cause is more down-to-earth.
The Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater will hold its Walk for Life April 20 at the Suffolk Executive Airport. The organization has four locations in Hampton Roads, including one in Suffolk, that offer free services such as pregnancy tests, ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy, parenting classes, Bible studies, counseling and other resources to pregnant women.
The organization says one abortion occurs in Hampton Roads for every two births. That’s a statistic it’s trying to turn around by providing hope and help to pregnant women who might otherwise consider abortion.
The theme for the walk this year is “Lifting Life Up,” and the new location and activities are built around the theme.
“In a lot of ways, we went very literal with that,” said Desiree Gaul, communications manager for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. “We really wanted to do something special in Suffolk. It has a very community atmosphere. Things fell into place, and it worked out that we could have a hot-air balloon there.”
Gaul said the changes are already stirring excitement.
“Everybody has given us really positive feedback,” she said. “We’re hoping it will be more well attended than in the past.”
The organization hopes to have at least 1,000 fundraising walkers who raise at least $250 each.
“It’s really easy to make a difference,” she said. “That’s $250,000 that can benefit this ministry.”
Last year, the organization served more than 1,700 women. It has a goal this year of helping 2,000 women.
“By helping raise funds, truly lives can be saved,” Gaul said.
Folks who won’t be able to attend the event are still able to raise money or donate.
Walkers can sign up for the event or get more information at www.cpcfriends.org. Registration begins that morning at 8:30 a.m. The airport is located at 1200 Gene Bolton Drive.
