Thrift store task force formed

The Salvation Army thrift store on West Washington Street will be open only on Saturdays indefinitely as a task force reviews how the store fits into the organization’s mission as well as the community at large, the head of the Salvation Army in Suffolk said.

Capt. Jim Shiels said the task force was created from the organization’s advisory board.

“After the task force starts, we should be able to have some definitive ideas,” Shiels said. “Our goal is to make the concept of the family store in this community productive in the way of service and providing good used items to the community.”

The building is located on the same block where Monument Construction hopes to renovate other buildings into 68 loft apartments and retail areas on the ground floor.

“It sounds to us like that area is kind of on a growth pattern,” Shiels said. “We want to make sure we’re not ill affecting that. We want to make sure we’re complementing what’s going on in the historical district.”

Shiels said the building is out of place on the street, as it’s the only one nearby that does not have second-floor housing.

“Our building is kind of an enigma,” he said. “It’s an interesting building. It’s an interesting downtown, because there’s very little parking. I know that (parking) is key to having this area come back.”

The organization is on the cusp of opening its new physical education and health building next door to its headquarters on Bank Street. A dedication of the building, which will house basketball courts, computer rooms and more, will be held Sept. 17.

Shiels said no decision on the thrift store is likely until after the new building is up and running.
