A 17-year-old is in custody and charged with multiple felonies after allegedly firing shots at police with his grandfather’s handgun late Sunday night.

Police received numerous calls of possible shots fired along the railroad track between the Saratoga and Lakeside areas, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

As police were investigating those calls, they received a report that the teen had vandalized his grandfather’s residence and stolen a handgun and ammunition. The teen also reportedly shot into a residence in the 1400 block of Holland Road, Klink said.

Searching the area of the report, police spotted the teen on top of a building. He fired a single shot at police, and an officer fired one round back in return, Klink said. No one was injured.

A SWAT team and negotiator were called in and succeeded in getting the suspect to surrender about 2:15 a.m.

The teen was charged with grand larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, reckless handling of a firearm, felony vandalism, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, nine counts of maliciously discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling, and attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer.

The juvenile is being held at the Tidewater Detention Home in Chesapeake.
