SCA hosting golf tourney

Suffolk Christian Academy will be hosting an inaugural golf tournament open to the public on Nov. 1 at Nansemond River Golf Club.

The school recently added three churches to its governance and correspondingly changed the name of the institution from First Baptist Christian School.

Taking on the name Suffolk Christian Academy, and a mascot switch from Crusaders to Knights, has required changes in apparel for the school’s student-athletes. SCA athletics director Steven Milner said the upcoming tournament is designed to “benefit the athletic department, with the majority of the monies raised going to uniform purchases.”

“People should come out to this event because we’re going to have great prizes, and it’s one of the cheapest golf tournaments around.”

Individual player registration will cost $65, while team registration will cost $250. Player packages can be bought for $20, featuring two mulligans and two raffle tickets.

Player registration includes green fees, cart, box lunch, beverages, snacks, dinner and awards. An auction will be held during dinner.

A $10,000 prize will be awarded to the golfer who hits a hole-in-one. Aside from this, over $2,500 worth of prizes will be handed out at the tournament.

First and second place finishers in each flight will be recipients of prizes, as will men, women and senior winners of the following contests: putting (at 10 a.m.), closest to the pin, drive closest to the line and longest drive.

The format for the golf tournament will be Captain’s Choice, and tee-off will be at 11 a.m.

Suffolk Christian is welcoming hole sponsors for $100, which will give the sponsor sign recognition at one of the 18 holes. Corporate sponsors can pay $300 for a sign at one hole, one foursome and recognition at the tournament.
