Despite a weather forecast that seems specially engineered to put a damper on Peanut Fest, officials are keeping their spirits high and hoping for the best.

“As it stands, everything is a go,” Tourism Development Manager Theresa Earles said Wednesday afternoon. “Nothing has been canceled or postponed.”

The city was under a coastal flood advisory until 6 a.m. Thursday, and North Main Street was closed at the Kimberly Bridge for part of the day Wednesday because of flooding. Rain is expected to continue through Sunday before the weather clears up on Monday, with potential rainfall totals as high as 3.25 inches through Saturday morning, the city said.

Earles said the public will be notified through media and the city’s Facebook and website if anything changes.

“We’ve had a few drizzly Peanut Fests in the past,” she said. “There’s a lot of work that goes into this festival, so we’re going to do everything we can to make sure the public gets to enjoy it.”

There is one positive aspect to all the rain, Earles pointed out.

“I expect our mud bog to be even muddier,” she said.

The festival opens at 2 p.m. today and stays open to 10:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
