Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Dale Roscoe, junior for King’s Fork High School volleyball: Offensively and defensively, he led the way for the Bulldogs this past Tuesday in a four-set road victory over Heritage High School, recording 13 kills and nine blocks. On Thursday, he was the team co-leader in kills with seven in a straight sets home win against Phoebus High School.
- Griffin Genier, senior for Nansemond River High School golf: He earned the top individual score at the regional championship on Tuesday and consequently advanced to play at the state level. Both were firsts for him. Though most struggled with the windy and damp conditions, he played great with rounds of 74 and 77 on the par-72 Sleepy Hole Golf Course, winning by six strokes.
- Kana Hashigami, senior for King’s Fork High School field hockey: She was bleeding after Monday’s home game against Northampton High School, having been hit by a stick in the first half, but the injury did not prevent her from scoring the winning goal in overtime. With five minutes to go and light fading in the rain-delayed contest, she made it a 2-1 final score, redemption after a loss to the Lady Yellow Jackets last year.
- Tatyana Thomas, senior for Nansemond River High School volleyball: She recorded 16 kills, no errors and six blocks in a four-set win over host Lakeland High School on Thursday. Two days earlier, she produced 12 kills in a 3-0 win against visiting Phoebus High School. Her continued leadership helped the Lady Warriors improve to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
