The Planning Commission on Tuesday took three separate votes to clear more of the way for the new municipal center and the expansion of the police department headquarters.

The commission voted to rezone city-owned property north of the current police headquarters, which will become the new parking lot for the building once it is expanded across the current parking lot.

The commission also voted to do away with a section of Spring Street that runs behind the new municipal center and will be turned into a parking area for the building, and voted on doing away with the section of Spring Street between Pender Street and Henley Place.

The section between Pender Street and Henley Place will only be destroyed once two-way traffic is established on Pender Street, Planning Director Scott Mills said. The decision on the other section will be effective immediately.

The new municipal center is set to be available for city employees and equipment to move in by summer. After that, the current one will be demolished.

In other business, the commission approved two family transfers.
