Charlie Powell

Mr. Charlie Powell, a long-time resident of Suffolk, died at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk on Oct. 16, 2013. He was born in Nansemond County on Feb. 22, 1926, and was the son of the late Lewis Powell and Inez Riddick Powell.

Mr. Powell attended public school in Suffolk. He worked at the Naval Supply Center in Norfolk before being drafted into the Army. He participated in the European Theater of Operations during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1954. He spent more than 30 years as an employee of the Tidewater Blanching Company in Suffolk. He was a member of the Greater First Baptist Church Orlando in Suffolk.

Mr. Powell is survived by his loving sister, Amanda R. Rodgers, of Suffolk; son, Wilbert Savage, of Suffolk; aunt, Laura R. Butler, of Chesapeake; cousins, Essie M. DeLoatch and Marie Thurman, both of Suffolk; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Greater First Baptist Church Orlando, 600 Factory St. in Suffolk, with the Rev. Moses Ware officiating. Mr. Powell will lie in repose at the church before the funeral. Burial will be noon Monday at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Crocker Funeral Home of Suffolk is handling the arrangements.

The family will receive friends at 2610 Riddick Drive in Suffolk.
