The Nansemond River High School field hockey team entered its final week of the regular season with a full slate of opponents. Though two thirds of the games have ended successfully and the team has locked up second in the conference, it has not happened with the level of quality play Lady Warriors head coach Ali Mowry expects.

On Monday, Nansemond River visited Kecoughtan High School, leaving with a 2-1 overtime win.

Some of the statistics help explain why Mowry said, “I wasn’t really pleased with our performance that game.” Her team still needed overtime to win though it had 12 penalty corners to Kecoughtan’s two, and out-shot the opposing team 22-3.

Kecoughtan scored first, mid-way through the first half. Right before halftime, Nansemond River senior forward Kimberly Bates responded with an unassisted goal.

Following a scoreless second half, sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Mounie ended the contest 54 seconds into overtime off an assist by Bates on the Lady Warriors’ 12th corner.

On Tuesday, Nansemond River took second in the Ironclad Conference for the regular season, winning its final conference game 4-0 over host Phoebus High School.

With an eye on the post-season, Mowry said it was an improvement from Monday, but “I still don’t think it was our best going into that game.”

The Lady Phantoms were out-shot 15 to 2, and the Lady Warriors benefited from 12 penalty corners.

Bates got the scoring started via an assist from sophomore forward/midfielder Ashley Hiltabrand. Senior forward Amber Daubenspeck scored the next two goals, one off an assist by sophomore midfielder Claire Janek during a penalty corner and the other unassisted.

Hiltabrand put in the lone goal in the second half, unassisted.

Nansemond River (10-4, 4-1) closes out the regular season today with a road rematch against its rivals at Grassfield High School.
