Basketball club aims to help Suffolk schools

Kevin Davis, former director of the Team Evolve basketball team, has noticed Suffolk’s young basketball talent has been spread thin, and he is seeking to do something about it.

For years, multiple Amateur Athletic Union basketball teams have featured local players, including the Suffolk Blazers, Raging Bulls, Running Rebels and Suffolk Venom.

“You really couldn’t get anything accomplished because within the city, you had four club basketball teams vying for just a limited amount of kids,” Davis said.

Davis’ plan is to merge Suffolk’s AAU teams and create the Team Suffolk Basketball Club.

Benefiting King’s Fork, Lakeland and Nansemond River high school will be the sole focus of the club.

“In the city of Suffolk, we’re blessed to have three high school coaches who know what they’re doing,” Davis said.

He is hoping to have representatives from each school on Team Suffolk’s executive committee.

“I think it shows a lot of solidarity,” Lakeland head coach Clint Wright said. “I think that united we will stand.”

Team Suffolk is intended for boys and girls from second through 11th grades.

The fee to join the team is $20, and AAU cards will cost $16.

Team Suffolk is currently seeking volunteer coaches and potential team members. The club is currently hosting open gyms on Monday and Wednesday at Kilby Shores Elementary School from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
